Whats in a number?

By Cliff Marks on January 9, 2010

AP Whats in a number?I am glad that I decided to wait for a day to post my thoughts on the AP Poll that came out yesterday. I gave me time to relax and think logically through the process and look at it more objectively. What does number four mean in terms of the finish to a perfect 14-0 season and what effects will it have on the preseason polls for next year, these are two questions I will address.

In terms of the finish to this season; Boise State has done everything right. Winning every game is no simple feat. Okay so the objection of The WAC  as weaker conference always comes up in discussion. So let me ask this, who is undefeated in their conference? Hey MAC do you have any undefeated teams? What about you SunBelt? C-USA, anything? The real fact her is the conference you play in should matter not. It’s a pretty amazing feat to go undefeated. Everyone you play on any given day will bring their “A” game and you have to be prepared. Translation you have to be well coached.

The AP writers do not know how to adjust their thought processes for a school like Boise State. How can this small mid-major college impact our system. Here is a fact for you guys to ponder: Boise State is not a Mid-Major, Non BCS college any more. Boise State is a contender, you heard me I said a contender – Boise State is not going away and you will have to accept that and vote accordingly. The insult is less on Boise State because their Blue Collar pride will keep them in check, the insult is on Texas and Alabama. What you did in your voting process was deem the BCS National Championship game meaningless. The Longhorns came in at number two and after suffering a loss they remained number two. Why play the game? I’m sure Colt might say the same, he could have done without the injury.

I can understand about Florida, their only loss came to number one Alabama. Which leaves Texas with their only loss coming to the number one Alabama. The AP logic says that two teams with one loss coming at the hands of the number one team trumps the undefeated team from the WAC. Okay Boise State will accept that logic and move on. The fans won’t like it, but they too will accept it and move on. Personally your logic need to be reviewed by the officials, I think the call should be reversed.

Now on to the preseason polls. Boise State will start in the top five, more than likely at the number five spot. I say this only because of the reasons I cited earlier in this post, lets just call it AP logic. However, if Boise State begins in the top five it will be harder to suffer a backwards fall similar to what happened this year with their “adjustment” drop. If the Broncos have another undefeated season next year with their improved schedule and a top five start they could surely wind up in the BCS National Championship game right? Remember my mention of AP logic, keep that in mind when I tell you that Boise State will not play for the National Championship next season if they finish undefeated. They will however play in a nice, neatly wrapped BCS bowl game in Pasadena where they will come out smelling like a Rose with another BCS bowl victory. There will be no trip to the White House.

Congratulations Boise State on your Perfect 14-0 season and Fiesta Bowl Championship.

I cannot believe this utterly ridiculous nonsense! I, too, waited to look at the polls and thought this was some error or not updated fully or something: http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings

I thought it was a no-brainer that Boise would be ranked number two! WTF!?!

I cannot stand that they (the BCS) continue to feed us this crap: it’s always the same worn-out, nonsensical talking points.

Playoff? Why is it that I-AA (FCS) has been rocking a 16-team field for years (and expands to 20) and is done BEFORE the bowls end? There’s no “impact on the student’s exam schedule” or “increase in injuries” that has been reported as some kind of problem down there! And do those schools, teams, players, or coaches believe that their “regular season schedule is lessened/diminished in importance?” Finally, you CAN “keep the current bowl system intact” by using some of the bigger bowls (and their corporate sponsors) as sites for what would be playoff rounds; the other small bowls could still be played earlier (as they are now) with the teams not invited to the playoff; and the Big Dawg BCS Bowls that currently rotate (Fiesta, Orange, Rose, and Sugar) could rotate the two semi-final games and the national championship game (only every fourth year your bowl would have to host a game in the quarters… OMGosh!)

I mean it is not rocket science here as we fans truly know. Just tell ‘em to take their crap off the menu… we aren’t interested in ordering it or even considering it as an option any longer!
