Twitter weighs in on Boise State’s BCS hopes

Wild things have been going on the past few days among Bronco Nation. We got very lucky by having the seven teams ranked ahead of us lose this past weekend. The last few days we have seen the Big East make huge changes. I have read some very interesting things among college football fans on twitter, and I want to analyze and share a few of them.

This tweet is sadly loaded with truth. Nearly every team seems like they would rather be in a different conference. Joey hit the nail right on the head. One thing I’m observing  with all of this conference realignment, is that most big conferences (SEC, ACC, etc.) are getting to twelve or more teams. Then conferences like the Mountain West or Big East are taking teams from the weaker conferences like the WAC and C-USA. Then the WAC and C-USA have to take teams from Division 1-AA or Division II. In my eyes, this is going to create an overpopulation in the FBS.

Chadd is exactly right. It is not good. The one other team we’ll need to pass is a four-loss Michigan team. I’d say we have about a 10-15% chance at making a BCS bowl game with our current situation.

This is a tweet from a FSU fan. He doesn’t want his team to play Kent State. Who would? You work hard all year-long and make a BCS bowl just to play Kent State? They got blown out by Kentucky for crying out loud.

My boss is absolutely correct. This shows how terrible the BCS is. The possibility that Kent State and Georgia Tech could be playing in the Orange Bowl shows a major flaw in the BCS. Boise State is unlucky that their one loss the past two seasons came in conference. This kept them from getting an automatic qualifier spot. Regardless, it would be a travesty if no name Kent State makes a BCS bowl over the inventors of the BCS busters Boise State. Another fact to take into consideration – the BCS computer polls do not look at final scores of games. They do not know that Kent State lost by 33 points to Kentucky

Chris, we are absolutely spoiled. Anything but an undefeated season is seen as almost a failure to us. This is partly due to the schedule we play, because we shouldn’t lose to the teams we’ve lost to the past 3 seasons. BSU having two losses for how much we lost last season is understandable, but we still should not have lost to Michigan State and SDSU. We could be very well undefeated.

You have to beat San Diego State at home! Boise State was a 16.5 home favorite in a night game. If BSU squeaks out that win, we’re probably sitting around 14 or 15 in the BCS rankings. You absolutely have to beat a San Diego State team at home.

Two-Loss Broncos BCS Talk?

This past weekend has been absolutely crazy amongst the Boise State fans that are on twitter. This is rightfully so. Boise State’s bye week had fans on edge. We all know what happened, the seven teams ranked ahead of Boise State all lost. All of the Broncos fans went wild, and started talking about a BCS bowl. Wait a second, a BCS bowl for the currently 9-2 Broncos? Maybe next year we could be saying that realistically, but we’re saying that while we’re in the Mountain West? It was the craziest weekend of BSU football without there actually being a game in recent memory. A two-loss MWC conference team should be content with a number 20 ranking under any circumstance.

Arguably one of the wildest things about all this BCS talk is how Boise State’s football brand has helped them. The 2010 and 2011 Kellen Moore teams are very fresh in our memory. Both were terrific one-loss teams that got snubbed from the BCS. Boise State being the “team who doesn’t play anyone” hurt them. This year, Boise State lost to a Michigan State team who ended up being terrible and an average San Diego State team. To be honest with ourselves, this BSU team has no right to be in the polls. San Jose State, Utah State, Louisiana Tech, UCF, Tulsa, Kent State, and Northern Illinois are all non-AQ teams that can make a case for being better than Boise State this season. Most of them have better resumes than Boise State. Besides beating BYU and Fresno State (both at home), Boise really hasn’t had any solid wins. This isn’t to bash on the Broncos by any means, I am just simply stating how much BSU has helped themselves by being so great the past decade. In somewhat of a rebuilding/reloading year, Boise State is in the BCS buster talks after two losses. That’s incredible.

How much of a possibility is Boise State playing in a BCS bowl? All Boise State has to do is finish in the top 16 ahead of the MAC and Big East champion. The 16th spot is owned by UCLA, which we expect to lose to Stanford, again. The 17th spot has Kent State, who we will hope loses in an ugly game to Northern Illinois. The 18th ranked Longhorns play at Kansas State. There’s a loss for them. The team ranked at 19 is Michigan, who is idle Saturday. With a big win over Nevada, I’d expect the Broncos to jump a four-loss Michigan team. With a UCLA loss, an ugly Kent State loss, a Texas loss, a hoping that we would jump Michigan, and hold off Northern Illinois, Boise State would land at #16 in the BCS rankings. Is it too far fetched? Am I missing something? After how improbable last week’s luck ran, it could happen again.

Anyways, I’m done rambling on about the BCS. It is time to get focused on the task ahead of us. I’m personally calling this game against Nevada – “Redemption in Reno” even though we really can’t redeem the 2010 loss. I have marked my calendar for December 1st as soon as the schedule was released. It is about time Boise State fans get pumped for the game in Reno!

Why Boise State’s BCS Bowl Hopes Didn’t Die in East Lansing

Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com may have resuscitated Boise State’s BCS Bowl hopes today. When he updated his 2012 Bowl predictions. Palm stated the following:

The ACC champion is locked to the Orange Bowl and it will be Florida State. The Orange Bowl gets the final pick and will select a one-loss Boise State.

After suffering a backbreaking loss to LeVeon Bell err I mean Michigan State this past Friday, all the talk afterwards was that with Boise State’s loss there would be not be a “BCS Buster”. One would think that after 6 years of either being in a BCS Bowl game or being in the hunt for a BCS game, Boise State would be called a BCS Contender, but I digress.

After reading Palm’s statement it made me think. How could Palm be predicting Boise State to appear in a BCS game? I looked first to the BCS Selection Procedures, Under Number 3 of the Automatic Qualification rules reads the following:

The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, or the Western Athletic Conference will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:

  1. Such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or,
  2. Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.

No more than one such team from Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference shall earn an automatic berth in any year. (Note: a second team may be eligible for at-large eligibility as noted below.) If two or more teams from those conferences satisfy the provisions for an automatic berth, then the team with the highest finish in the final BCS Standings will receive the automatic berth, and the remaining team or teams will be considered for at-large selection if it meets the criteria.

It should be noted that the Broncos still have the rest of the season to make the above a reality.  Of course a few things have to fall their way.

  1. First and foremost BSU needs to be the Mountain West Conference Champion, something BSU failed to secure in 2011.
  2. It goes without saying that despite the blemish on their record the Broncos would need to be perfect the rest of the season.
  3. It would be helpful for Michigan State to win out and very helpful if they win the Big Ten Championship.
  4. Currently ranked 25th in the USA Today Poll, the Broncos would need to climb at least 9 spots and hope for a BCS conference winner to be ranked behind them or just rise 13 spots and finished Ranked 12th in the Final BCS Poll.

The Broncos have in the past finished in the top 16 and have been WAC Champions. During those years the Broncos were only awarded one automatic birth to a BCS game, the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. In the 2009 season the Broncos finished behind MWC Champ Utah in the BCS and settled for the Poinsettia Bowl. In 2010 the WAC Champions finished behind the TCU Horned Frogs, the MWC Champs, but ultimately secured an at large bid and ended up beating those same TCU Horned Frogs. In 2010 the Broncos shared a part of the WAC Championship, but fell short to the Nevada Wolfpack and finished behind TCU in the BCS Standings and played in the Las Vegas Bowl. Last year the Broncos fell to TCU in MWC play and finished second to TCU and well were snubbed from an at large bid.

Though the BCS hopes did not die in East Lansing, the Broncos face an uphill battle.  Not only do the Broncos need the aforementioned to fall into place, there is also that  chance that another non AQ Conference could have a team run the table and finish ahead of the Broncos.  The bottom line is that all is not lost on a BCS Bowl birth, but the Broncos will have to get back on their feet and fight, fight, fight.
