My Favorite BSU Football Players & Why

I have been writing for Blue Turf Nation now for over three years. For some reason, it never really occurred to me to just write a quick list of my favorite players of all time from Boise State. So I figured why not now? Here is my list of favorite BSU players based on what I like as a fan.

brock_forsey1.) Brock Forsey – Brock was the first superstar player I ever really attached to as a fan. As a kid, Brock did it all, punt returns, caught the ball, ran for touchdowns. It was easy to be excited and love everything he did on the field. The guy never quit fighting for yards and ended up in the NFL when it was uncommon for Bronco players. There has been a lot of debate around who is the best RB to ever play at Boise State. But for me, no player will ever be regarded as highly as Brock Forsey.

quintin_mikel2.) Quintin Mikell – Another guy who made it into the NFL out of BSU when it wasn’t the “norm”. Mikell was a star player and fun to watch on “The Blue”. But he takes the #2 spot because after the Humanitarian Bowl, he came to the North Endzone where I was sitting with my Dad at the time and gave me a high-five. For a kid, that changes everything and you never forget your first moment like that. Really, looking back, Mikell doing that, probably made me the die-hard fan I am still to this day.

406299_169784373127556_169539846485342_237299_592153088_n3.) Kellen Moore – I really don’t have to elaborate on Kellen Moore. For most people he is #1 on their list. Kellen was and is special. He symbolized everything a Bronco should be. He was the blue-collar kid who dominated the world. He also wore the same number as I did growing up #11. Chances are, Kellen will hold the top spot for a QB on my list for the foreseeable future.

ian-johnson-nfl-draft4.) Ian Johnson – 2006 was an incredible year for all the reasons we will always remember. But I don’t think any RB has ever had a season at BSU like IJ did that year. People forget quickly how his sophomore season was like nothing we, or really anybody had ever seen before. Ian that year averaged 6.2 yards PER CARRY. Let me say that again, 6.2 yards PER CARRY. He ran for over 140 yards in 6 games, and over 150 in 4 of them. Not to mention he did it on a battered body that included a punctured lung at one point. People can remember the proposal, but I dare anybody to find a performance more impressive than what IJ did against Oregon State. That sophomore season makes him an easy #4 for me.

p1.boise.zabransky5.) Jared Zabransky – A lot of people have mixed feelings about “Z”. I however hold him near and dear because he was born in Hermiston, Oregon. That alone would seem odd to matter if it wasn’t for the fact I was also born in Hermiston. My grandparents also go to church with his in Pendleton which is pretty cool. It is rare to have those kind of connections to a player so it really didn’t matter what Zabransky did or didn’t do on the field, because frankly he was always going to have a spot on my list.

Jay+Ajayi+UNLV+v+Boise+State+9WID3vGjQOTl6.) Jay Ajayi- For everything Brock and Ian did on the field Jay has pretty much done the same. Ajayi’s year this season has been incredible and you won’t find a more well rounded RB. I love the “Jay-Train” and the way Jay plays the game, he runs hard, and falls forward. If he has a massive day against Arizona, he might just climb my list.

Jeron-Johnson7.) Jeron Johnson The guy just wrecked people on the field… I am tempted to just leave it at that because that is why I loved him. I have never seen a player at BSU hit the way Jeron hit guys. He put legitimate fear in opposing teams, and I am not sure Russell Hill ever was the same after this. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iPUuoEAVfg). If you love football, you loved every moment you watched Jeron Johnson on “The Blue”.

KW+FIESTA8.) Kyle Wilson – Kyle Wilson had a bus with a giant picture of himself on it that his family drove around to promote him. Just saying that sounds bad, but Wilson backed it up every single time he laced up the cleats. He was “swagger” personified and the best ball-hawking CB I have seen in recent years. I loved watching Wilson wag his finger after defending a pass, and the hit he laid on Andy Dalton on the Fiesta Bowl will never be forgotten.  It is actually hard for me to have Wilson this low to be honest.

6e5fa55af879c96bac1da8bea3349b162fabb6b59.) Dempsey Dees – I don’t remember watching Dempsey play at BSU honestly. (I was just too young) But I remember his stats, and the fact he averaged an interception every other game at one point. I also loved CB’s and thought it was awesome we had one who was that successful at BSU. For whatever reason, because of that, he was always one of my favorites despite having a foggy memory of the actual plays he made.

doug-martin-alex-ibiloye-2010-1-4-23-41-2010.) Doug Martin – Doug was just awesome to watch play football. I still have not seen a RB at BSU finish runs with the pure force and anger Doug did. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiiT6WHYAzo) Martin had a knack for making big plays and had the best nickname in BSU history. Honestly, Doug belongs on most BSU fans top 10 list.

Honorable Mentions:
Korey Hall – Daryn Colledge – Ryan Dinwiddie

So Bronco Nation, who is your top 10 favorite players?

This Week at the Diggity’s – Week 3 (I’m not fat. I’m just a bit “Husky”!)

Usually, I like to add TWatD on the morning of the game. I realized that I would have to get up a bit too early on a Saturday to do that so I’m gonna give you what you want today. Please keep all the praise and pats on the back until after you read it though. And remember, I usually start the next column right away so some things may overlap. It’s okay though. There’s no such thing as TOO MUCH Broncos. There is such thing as too much of this:

That was done on purpose. UConn put it out as “Get Noisy for Boise”. Oddly enough, I couldn’t find one with sound.  Anyways, have a great week! Here we go.

Gameday – It’s a Blue Out tonight. I know there’s always someone who doesn’t get the memo but hopefully it translates to TV….With over 50k at Autzen, this town should be empty by about 1/3. And, as Mrs. Diggity reminded me, the rest should be panhandling or at WalMart….The new season of The Ultimate Fighter is a competition of 16 women & uses the “Love At First Fight” tag line. I wonder what would happen if that were used for a men’s competition? If they’re gonna fight, don’t minimize it with that kind of stuff, Fox….So, College Gameday is going to Fargo, North Dakota again. Boise State had two undefeated seasons and two Fiesta Bowl wins and could only shake one visit out of ESPN. How much money has BSU made for that company?….Alrighty, that’s a win folks. I can’t imagine that Jay Ajayi will be able to handle this kind of workload for the rest of the season. Or maybe he will. But maybe there’s something that we don’t know about Demas & Fields and that scares me big time….To the attendance/bad fan theorists, 34,910 for the home opener coming off a loss & a “bad” season isn’t horrible. I don’t think we’re at the Nebraska/LSU consecutive sellout streak level but have you ever been to Lincoln or Baton Rouge? Ok, I’ve been to Red Stick. It’s not a bad town….I wasn’t too bad with my prediction this week. Grant performed better. The ball went to a few more players. Jay got way more touches than I predicted though. At least I was close on the score (I predicted 38-24)….We decided to watch “Utopia” on Fox. It may turn out to be one of those train wreck shows that we can’t stop watching. Like Fresno State football this year….

Since it’s on everyone’s mind, I’m not sure anyone expected such a grandiose Tony Romo implosion in the first half of Sundays game against the 49ers. He gave us the best non-playoff Romo-ing ever….I’m not surprised about the Ravens releasing Ray Rice after the “REAL” video. I’m horrified that he ever had a chance to play for them again. He has demons that a 2-game suspension couldn’t fix….I started a new job today (Monday). So what does that mean? No Monday Night Football for the next 5 weeks because my schedule is 1:30 PM – 10:00 PM for training. I do get horrible training videos and paperwork today though….I just realized that this week’s game against UConn starts at 9 AM for me. I will have had my Bronco fix by early afternoon. What will I do with the rest of my day?….One of my favorite new shows is “Food Fighters”. It pits a home cook against 5 successive professional chefs. I couldn’t do it. I don’t have 5 great dishes that I could go to….I was talking to a Oregon Ducks fan and he said he still didn’t know how the Broncos won in 2008 & 2009. I told him, “Two words. KELLEN MOORE.”. His response? “Kellen Moore is overrated.” I then ended all football discussions with him. He obviously wasn’t knowledgeable on the subject….I try not to be ultra-serious in this “column” but I’d be doing The BTN a disservice if I didn’t mention the passing of the 13th anniversary of the Attacks on September 11, 2001. I will never forget the feeling I had that day and I hope I don’t, or you don’t either, ever have to feel that again. Thank you to anyone that has ever, or continues to, put their lives on the line to make everyone else feel safe….The BYU/Houston game was tough to watch in my opinion. It seemed that the Provo-based Cougars had no motivation or desire to put the Houston-based Cougars away. We know they can be better than that. I suggest that they’re holding back on purpose. Seems like that would be against any “Honor Code” though. Sandbaggers!

So there it is. Another fun-filled ride through Mrs. Diggity & I’s mischievous minds while we’re waiting, watching, and waiting again for Bronco Football.  Imagine the stuff I don’t write.  For the song of the week, I wanted to make it “Canine-Related”. I hope you all wake up on time tomorrow. Happy Friday!

This Week at the Diggity’s – Week 2 (I “Blue Out” Everything Today)

Good morning everyone. Happy Home Opener, Bronco Nation! Believe me, Mrs. Diggity and I wish we could be at Albertson’s Bronco Stadium but that drive from Oregon is a killer! We’ll be Blue’d Out from here though and be watching. Now why don’t we get this ride started (It was started previous to the Kickoff Game)?

I’m super-excited for this football game. Working on game analysis doesn’t hinder my excitement a bit. Now if I could figure how to put the data together….Are people so dumb that they can’t tell a Buick by the way it looks? How about the emblem that is pretty much famous? No? please don’t buy a car and drive….That was a bit disappointing. I’m proud of the defense, I’m upset with the offensive line, and I’m almost as confused Grant Hedrick looked as to what Grant Hedrick was doing. Time for adjustments. Or is that too simple?….

Mrs. Diggity is now into the final season of True Blood. Yay! And, yes, I watch it along with her because it’s on….The sun came up regardless of what happened in Atlanta. I’m not sure the Broncos will want to see the practice field due to the mistakes they made. At least, they didn’t have as many stupid penalties as Ole Miss had….Carl’s Jr. has bacon ranch fries currently. Lots of bacon on them. Warm ranch isn’t all that great. But, did I mention there was bacon?….I’m disappointed in the pessimism that some of our fan base is showing right now. One game does not a season make. If you expected a National Championship in Coach Harsin’s first season, move to Tuscaloosa….Bronco Legend Kellen Moore will be a Detroit Lion again this year. I doubt he’ll see the field unless something catastrophic happens. It’s likely the Lions decided they needed someone to help Jim Caldwell coach the team….So much college football on this first weekend. I need to set up like, I don’t know, 8 TVs and 2 computers to keep track of it….Can Kid Rock never make an “American Anthem” and then sell it to Chevy ever again, please?….After a touchdown play, I wonder if any players go to the coaches and congratulate them on their fine play calling….Yesterday, I did 14 hours of college football so I’m feeling some definite withdrawals today. Next Sunday, the NFL is back and that should help some….The SEC has front loaded their schedule with schools like Lamar and the Central Mississippi College of Optometry for their 2nd week. Don’t stress over that schedule yet….The Boise Hawks are apparently run by someone who has some leftover need for high school drama. They’ve been a great team over the years.  Don’t alienate the Boise State fan base because you’re frustrated….We watched a show on The Travel Channel about a 168 foot high water slide at a water park. Yeah, not in a million years. I’m not even sure about roller coasters anymore….Twenty-two members of a family brought a 23rd member of their family to Oregon’s opening game this week. They all carried him in around their necks. Little vials of his ashes. It’s an amazing, and kind of creepy, gesture….I was just taking a look back at my predictions from last week.  I was right on a couple of things (defensive back aggressiveness, heavy dose of Jay) and wrong on a few (outcome, SWR breaks a long TD, Miller catches 8 passes).  Hopefully, my predictions improve with the team….Please don’t compare Brad Kaaya & Grant Hedrick right now. I’m of the opinion that Brad would be sitting in Boise. He got some luck being the Hurricanes starter….So now Colorado State is the favorite in the Mountain Division? Good to know a win against a PAC 12 bottom feeder will get you so much respect. When do the Broncos play Wazzu next? (sorry, Jay)…Our apartment backs up to a street so people walk by all of the time. I just heard a whistle so I expected a dog. Nope! It was a woman calling her toddler. Gotta love those parenting skills. I guess I’d be horrible at it because I don’t whistle so well….Unless you have proof that someone is a bad fan, you should never accuse that person of being a bad fan. How do you know that circumstances prevent their fandom from being as awesome as yours?….Hey! One out of every four drivers in Oregon! I know my tail light is out. You’re very kind to let me know but I’ll fix it when I can. You don’t need to freak out like I’m dragging a dog….And speaking of Oregon drivers. If you have an “O” sticker, you must know that your football team runs a hurry-up offense. You shouldn’t be 5-10 miles under the speed limit. There’s no hurry-up in that….I just want to get this out there – if I had the reaction to, let’s say, Scarlett Johannsen, as Mrs. Diggity had to Adam Levine, she would straight flip her lid….The Vandals and Gators declared their lightning-delayed game a “no-contest” (insert your own jokes here).  The University of Idaho still got the $975k payout. Pretty good deal. They’ll play again in 2017. It’s ok for the Vandals to start praying for another non-lethal natural disaster now though….Let’s get the hashtag #HamPlanet trending as soon as possible….I’m glad he’s ok but why in the heck is Bob Knight hitting a cow news at all. What person said “Oh yeah. Run that at the bottom of the screen all night.”?….The Seahawks looked really good against the Packers in the first REAL NFL game of the season. Or were the Packers that bad? Either way, unless you are a Seattle fan, it wasn’t very compelling after halftime….Today will be a Eugene-record 32nd day in the 90s. It’s our first summer here.We bring the heat wherever we go….

I though about what the song of the week should be and I think the first line of this song pretty much sums up what I’ve been saying all week. We haven’t gone anywhere. Enjoy the game, have a great week, and GO BRONCOS!
