What are maps in Minecraft?

Each world that we can create in Minecraft is a new map , that is, it is the game scenario that we see in each new world. But of course, as in your own game, all of these can be edited and used to shape both small buildings and true marvels of construction. There are many users dedicated to doing this and then posting them on the internet so that others can download them (now we will see how to do it).

Install Maps in Minecraft: PC, Windows and Mac

The maps in this game are one of the main tools to take users to a gameplay totally different from the usual one . Thanks to these edited worlds, we can live adventures, demonstrate our skills or even fight against others in online mode (although we leave the latter for another article).

In short, if you did not know this about the maps in Minecraft or have never tried any, you have just discovered an incredible tool to continue enjoying the game for many hours.

Where to download Minecraft maps?

Maps consist of a file or files that we must include in a specific path on our team so that, at the start of the game, it loads as if it were one of our own worlds.

There are many, many places to download these files, but as always happens on the internet, not all of them are “reliable” places. For this reason, we have compiled some of the best repositories websites for these maps so that you can download them without any problem:

  • ZonaCraft : is one of the most popular repositories of maps, mods, textures and shaders for Minecraft lovers. Within its catalog we have a classification by versions of the game. In addition, the nature of these is the most varied and daily include news.
  • Miniecrafting : another of the great content repositories for this game. Several new maps are added periodically to this website, among which we can find adventure-themed, skyblocks, or incredible buildings that have taken a long time to develop.
  • MapCraft : do you want maps? Well, this repository surely has one for you with its catalog of 3,900 maps so far. Since 2011, different scenarios created by users have been accumulating on this website, storing a large number of types that range from parkour, mystery, skyblocks, labyrinths and a very long etcetera.

  • Planet Minecraft : another of the best websites where we can find these worlds designed to enjoy the game. In addition to the types of maps and content that we see on other websites, on this website we can download scale recreations of buildings or even means of transport such as a locomotive. Even recreations of emblematic places such as castles, or the Brooklyn Bridge itself.
  • Minecraft Maps : this website specialized in maps is, perhaps, one of the ones with the best classification system of all. They differentiate quickly in their top menu by: adventure, parkour, survival, puzzle, etc.

Install Minecraft maps

Now that you know everything important about maps in Minecraft and where you can download them, let’s go to the most important thing: installation.

Normally, when downloading a map, we have a file in .zip format with which we will now see the procedure to follow for its installation. There are some maps (especially the most current ones) that we can download in the .mcworld or .mcpack format, in this case we will only have to double click on them so that they are automatically installed on our computer.

However, if the item you downloaded has the extension .zip or .rar (as usual) , you will have to do the following:

  • Unzip the downloaded file. You will have a folder with several items inside. This folder should include everything, or almost (they will specify it on the download website), what you need to be able to play this map.

  • Log in to Minecraft and within the loading menu before clicking on “play” we will have to make some adjustments. Locate the option “Installations” in the upper bar and, here, we must load the appropriate version of the game for each new map (this detail is specified on the map download websites).
  • Click on “create” to activate a new version of the game.
  • In this new menu we can customize the different settings regarding the installation of versions. We can give it a characteristic icon to locate it quickly, give it the name we want, select the appropriate version (the most important point) and some more details. Once this section is configured, click on create.

  • Now that we have the correct version installed to be able to play our map, we have to place it on the correct route. This will depend on our operating system. In MacOS you will have to access the path / Users / USERNAME / Library / Application Support / minecraft / saves changing the value of USERNAME for your username. In Windows access the path C: / Users / USERNAME /AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/saves changing, as in the previous one, the value of USERNAME for your username.

  • It is in this “saves” folder where you will have to paste the unzipped folder of the .zip or .rar file with all the elements inside. Once you are on this route, you will already have the map available within Minecraft . You start the game (in the facilities section) in the correct version for the map and that’s it.

The best Minecraft maps

Since you know how to install them and everything about them, we have compiled some of the most incredible and fun maps of Minecraft to get you off to a good start in this “world”.

Ghibli universe

A total of 50 players have been commissioned to recreate the universe of the Studio Ghibli movies . A review of films such as Spirited Away or Howl’s MovingCastle . You can download it from the Planet Minecraft website.

Titanic

Yes, as you are reading it, a real-scale recreation of the Titanic ship with great detail: dining rooms, stairs, cellars, cabins, etc. You can get this map, like the previous one, on the Planet Minecraft website.

Wild west

For lovers of taverns, horses, Indians and outlaws, this map that recreates the Wild West is a true pass. It will even make you feel the intoxicated state of cowboys when overdoing it. You can download it on the Minecraft Maps website.

Rich Medieval Town & Castle

One of the best maps that you can find in terms of design, details and a lot, but a lot of work behind it. In Rich Medieval Town & Castle we can visit in detail a city from medieval times. From the main castle to the houses they will help you immerse yourself in the experience. Once again, you can get this map from the Planet Minecraft website.

How to Download and Install Minecraft Maps

Custom Minecraft maps can be shared, allowing others to enjoy your creations and giving you access to remarkable templates. Whether you're interested in player-versus-player action, parkour, puzzles, survival, or something else, there are maps available for every style of gameplay. Here's how to download a Minecraft map and install it.

Downloading and installing Minecraft maps varies by platform.

Download and Install Maps on a Computer

Installing a custom map in Linux, macOS, or Windows involves extracting the downloaded package into the correct folder location and launching it from the game's world interface.

  1. Download a custom map and extract the file contents using an appropriate program for your operating system. Most map downloads are in a RAR or ZIP file, and you can extract these files using the OS's default application.

  2. Copy the extracted folder from its current location.

  3. Navigate to the default location for your Minecraft saves directory, typically found in the following path:

    • Linux: /home//.minecraft/saves/ ...
    • macOS: /Users//Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/ ...
    • Windows: \Users\\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves\ ...
  4. Paste the previously extracted contents into the saves folder.

  5. Open Minecraft and select Play.

  6. Select Singleplayer.

  7. A list of available worlds displays, including the custom map that you downloaded and copied to yoursaves folder. Choose the new map and select Play Selected World.

  8. After a brief delay, the custom map loads, and you can begin playing.

  2. When the welcome screen appears, tap Settings.

Instructions[]

Instructions on how to open the file into minecraft.

Prerequisites[]

  • A file archiving program, like 7zip.
    • This is optional if you just change the extension to in Bedrock
  • A copy of the version you want to put the world in

Bedrock Specific Instructions (Android/Fire OS/iOS/Windows 10) (Recommended)[]

After you download a bedrock map, you should already have a file name with in it, like . It should also have a Minecraft icon in it. Just double click it and it will automatically open in Minecraft. You can easily rename bedrock .zip files to a .mcworld simply by changing the extension. is just a special file extension optimized for Minecraft Bedrock.

So, instructions are:

  • Change the extension to .mcworld if it isn't already.
  • Double click the file.

If it didn't automatically open, select Minecraft if asked. If it still doesn't work, follow the guide below.

Java & Bedrock Instructions[]

These instructions are compatible with both Java and Bedrock and will guide you to a step by step process of installing a world to Minecraft.

NOTE that you cannot open Bedrock worlds in Java and vice versa; you will need a converter to do that.

[]

This is necessary if you have a compressed file.

  1. Extract the compressed file.
  2. If you see a file named , then you're good to go! Extract the zip/rar to a folder ()
    1. If you can only see a folder, open it. It might have the files. Extract that folder and rename it to a good name, like (

Importing into Minecraft[]

Once you extracted it to a folder, follow these steps:

  1. Open the default directory for Minecraft folder.
    1. On Java Edition, the name of the folder is . Below is a table showing the default directory for .minecraft.
OS Location
Windows
macOS
Linux
    1. On Bedrock Edition, the name of the folder is . Below is a table listing these:
Platform Location
Windows (including mobile)
Android and Fire OS For SD Card users:
For Internal Storage:
iOS
  1. Open the ‌[Java Edition only] or ‌[Bedrock Edition only] folder. You will notice all your worlds are here.
  2. Paste that folder into the mentioned folder.
  3. Open the new folder and check to make sure it has everything in it, all right under .
  4. Once they're all there, launch the game, and continue below.

Find the folder in Minecraft[]

Here's the hardest part: finding your new save in all your other saves.

  1. Once Minecraft opens, click "Singleplayer" or "Play"
  2. The name of the folder you copied will be the grayed out name under the world name (On Java).
  3. The new save is usually all the way at the bottom, but that's not always the case. You might need to do some hunting.
  4. Once you found it, load it up and have fun! You may have to back up the world if it was saved in a different version of Minecraft.

Alternate Instructions[]

If you found the above instructions confusing, here is a simpler explanation:

  1. Download the world file (usually in or ) format
    1. If it is bedrock map, rename to .mcworld, then open in Minecraft
      1. If this doesn't work, continue below
  2. Extract to a new folder (WORLD)
  3. Find the .minecraft or com.mojang folder
  4. Look for the or folder
  5. Copy-paste the (WORLD) to that folder
  6. Open up Minecraft and find it in your selection of saved worlds

Tips[]

  • On Windows, you can press to open the run dialog, then paste the Minecraft folder location in there.
  • You can also drag and drop folders to the saves folder, which might save you time from copy-pasting.
  • On Bedrock, you might see jumbled letters in the folder names like . This is normal, and you can always rename them for easy identification.
  • To access map datapacks or resource packs, you can access them by copying the contents inside the map to the main folders.

Love it but it has a secret use

I love Minecraft and this made it so easy to get worlds and post worlds. They are super great at equally showing worlds. All the worlds I posted were shown in latest at a good spot for a good amount of time giving them time to be actually seen unlike other apps like this. Also me and my friend have been trying to share each other’s world for a long time and it’s always super hard but now you can just post the world you wanna share, have your friend download it, then delete it all in under 10 minutes! It was a life saver and I definitely recommend it!

It’s a pretty good app.

This app is ok. I mean, it is good if you want maps and seeds for exploring or playing on. And also it’s fun to share your maps and creations to the world. But I think that it could be better. For instance, if you are looking for a map that is really detailed and nice, then you have to look for like 10min to get what you want. And the rating system is bad. Whoever does it is pretty bias, because all the mini games that have lots of mods have 5 star ratings, when the beautiful castles and towns have like no stars at all. Seriously, if you want mini games, check out online servers, or Roblox. That is what I have to say about the app. But if you want something that is nice, check out the other apps this developer made, Addons for Minecraft, it has so many better maps and Addons that you can plug into any game you want. Trust me, it is way better than this app.

I like it and I hate it.

First, let’s talk positive.
I enjoy this app because you can upload almost anything you create on Minecraft, and share it with friends. It is great for storing your worlds if you are anxious about losing your worlds. I had Minecraft once, and uploaded my favorite worlds to this app and when I deleted the game, I felt content knowing my worlds were safe and I could re-install Minecraft and continue my adventures.

Now, for the negative stuff.
This app needs some help. Some serious help. First of all, the wait to review a submitted world is dreadfully long. There are actual people reviewing every single world, making the wait the way it is. And second, they seem to be picking favorites. Correct me if I’m wrong, but they choose heavily modded/pointless minigames over the better things Minecraft has to offer, like survival worlds with cheats off and magnificent, good-looking buildings in Creative Mode. If you want to play minigames, kids, please check out Roblox! Some of my and many others’ legitimate worlds are being oppressed and our creativity as well!

I know, I’ll probably get a lot of hate after posting this but if you choose to oppose what I’m saying here, just think: you oppressed someone’s freedom of speech. And you LIKED it.

How to Install Downloaded "Minecraft" Maps

I have experience making tutorials on YouTube and decided to expand my following by writing tutorials as well!

What Is a Minecraft Map? How Do I Download One?

In Minecraft, you can craft a map out of paper made from sugar cane and add it to your inventory. The map will draw itself as you explore and record where you go. To use a ready-made map, you can be gifted one from a friend, or you can download one from the Internet.

Once you've downloaded a map, though, there are a few steps you need to take in order to be able to explore it in the game. Read on to learn about the following steps:

  1. Downloading a Minecraft map
  2. Locating the Minecraft map on your computer
  3. Unzipping the compressed file
  4. Playing your new map

1. Find and Download a Map

The first thing you need to do is find a map to download. As mentioned above, many times YouTube videos of Minecraft play will contain download links for that map. There are also websites that aggregate Minecraft maps for download.

Always be careful when downloading files from the Internet and only download maps from trusted sources. Be sure that your computer's anti-virus software is up-to-date. Don't download .EXE files that claim to be installers, as they are likely to be viruses.

Some popular sites for downloading maps include:

  • Planet Minecraft Projects
  • The Maps section of Minecraft Forum
  • Minecraft Maps

2. Find Your Saved Files

Your downloaded map will most likely be in a .ZIP or .RAR form. To unzip it, you will first need to locate the saved file in your Minecraft "saves" folder, as that is where downloaded game files like maps are stored.

What is the Minecraft "saves" folder, and how do you locate it? The folder is in your directory of Minecraft files. There are a few ways to locate it:

Using the Minecraft Launcher

  1. Open the Launcher, and select Edit Profile.
  2. Click the Open Game Dir option. "Dir" is short for "Directory."
  3. Your "saves" folder will be in the .minecraft directory.

Using Windows

  1. Open the Start menu and select Run.
  2. Type (without quotes) "%appdata%\.minecraft\saves\" and hit Enter.

Using Mac OS

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Select Go and Go to Folder...
  3. When prompted, enter (without quotes) "~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves".

3. Unzip the Map File

The downloaded map file it is most likely in .RAR or .ZIP format, which will need to be unzipped. Unzip it with your favorite unzipper, such as WinRAR, 7-Zip, or The Unarchiver (for Mac OS).

  1. Having located the "saves" folder, you can copy the folder path of the "saves" folder into your unzipper of choice.
  2. Depending on which program you use, the unzipped file will be automatically saved to the Minecraft "saves" folder, or you may be prompted to choose where to save the file.
  3. If saved to the Desktop or another location other than the "saves" folder, copy and paste the extracted file into the "saves" folder, which you learned how to locate in Step 2.
  4. You can also rename your downloaded map if you like.

4. Launch Your Downloaded Map

If your downloaded, unzipped map has been saved in the Minecraft "saves" folder, you should be able to select it when you play Minecraft when asked to select a World from your Worlds list.

How to Download \u0026 Install Custom Maps in Minecraft 1.13 on a Mac

Installing a minecraft map may seem a bit difficult, but it’s actually a very simple process that we’ll discover together. The process doesn’t differ too much on different devices, you’ll need to download the map and then drag it to the /saves folder. Let’s find out in detail how to install a map on Minecraft.

Install a map on Minecraft Java PC or Mac

This short guide is mainly aimed at Windows users. However, it is the same process for most operating systems, only the folder path will be different.

The steps to install a Minecraft map.

Total Time:2 minutes

  1. Start by downloading a Minecraft map

how to install map minecraft download

You will find a selection of the best maps on Minecraftmaps

  2. Press WINDOWS + R to open the command prompt

how to install a minecraft keys windows r map

Type %appdata% in the window that appears and press enter

  3. Navigate to the /saves folder in the root of Minecraft

how to install a map minecraft folder save

If you’ve played solo before, there will already be Minecraft worlds in there.

  4. Drag in this folder the Minecraft maps you want to install

commentaire installateur une map minecraft glisser map

Of course, you must have downloaded Minecraft maps beforehand.

  5. If the map is still in .zip format, unzip it into this folder

You have to unzip the card, otherwise it won’t work.

  6. Launch Minecraft and select the freshly installed map

    Enjoy your Minecraft map !

The majority of minecraft maps you can download will probably be archived in a .zip or .rar file. The folders and files contained in this archive need to be extracted into your minecraft backup folder, which allows minecraft to detect the map. To do this, you will need a file archiving program, such as 7-Zip (Windows only), which is free.

If you have a Mac, the Archive Utility built into OS X will be able to open .zip files by right-clicking on the .zip file and selecting “Open with > Archive Utility”, but you will need a program like The Unarchiver for .rar files.

On Mac the procedure is almost the same :

  1. Press SHIFT + COMMAND + G from the Finder
  2. Enter /Users/YOUR USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Minecraft in the window
  3. Validate or press Enter
  4. Navigate to the /saves folder
  5. Drag the maps you want to install into this folder
  6. If the map is still in .zip format, unzip it into this folder

Install a Minecraft PE map (Bedrock) on Ios and Ipad

Most PE maps nowadays use the .mcworld format. This is a special file created just for minecraft. Simply click on it to automatically install the map in your game, regardless of the system you are using.

However, some PE maps still use the old system, which will usually be a .zip file.

Installing these on your iPhone and iPad is a bit more tedious. To do this, you will need to:

  1. Download and extract the Minecraft PE map folder you want to play.
  2. Download and install iExplorer (the free demo version is sufficient).
  3. Connect your iOS device and your computer with a USB cable, then open iExplorer.
  4. Tap on “Applications” and search for “Minecraft PE” .
  5. Click the following folders in order: Documents> games> com.mojang> MinecraftWorlds.
  6. Drag the Minecraft PE map folder to the minecraftWorlds folder.

Installing a Minecraft PE map (Bedrock) on Android

The way it works is almost identical to the one on iOS, you should be able to install the downloaded map by opening the .mcworld file.

If it is a .zip file, follow the procedure below:

  1. Install “ASTRO File Manager” on your Android device from the Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore. Other file managers for Android may also work.
  2. Use your device’s browser to find a map and download it.
  3. Once the map is downloaded, open “ASTRO File Manager” and click on the “Download” folder.
  4. Click on the zip archive file of the map.
  5. Press and hold the map folder until an icon appears at the top left: once you press it, the message “Copy 1 item” should appear at the bottom, followed by “Undo” and “Paste” buttons.
  6. Go back to ASTRO’s primary folders (where the “Download” folder was), then select “games> com.mojang> MinecraftWorlds”.
  7. Click the “Paste” button at the bottom and your map should now be installed.

You can also simply connect your Android device to a computer with a USB cable and search for the “games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds” folder, then copy and paste the map folder into it.

Install a Minecraft map on Windows 10

The operation is almost identical to that on iOS and Android, you should be able to install the downloaded map by opening the .mcworld file.

If it’s a .zip file, follow the procedure below:

  1. Download the map you want to play (all the latest Minecraft PE (Bedrock) maps should work).
  2. Open the file (usually .zip or .rar) with a file archiving program, such as 7-Zip.
  3. Extract the map to your minecraft backup folder.
  4. You can find the backup folder simply by searching for “execute” and then typing it into the application :

%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds

Required Materials to make a Map

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft a map in Minecraft:

How to craft a Map in Survival Mode

1. Open the Crafting Menu

First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3x3 crafting grid that looks like this:

3x3 crafting area

2. Add Items to make a Map

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3x3 crafting grid. To make a map, place 8 papers and 1 compass on Java Edition (PC/Mac), Xbox and PS in the 3x3 crafting grid. In PE and Windows 10, you need 9 papers to make a map.

When making a map, it is important that the items are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. For PC, Xbox and PS, place 1 compass in the center box and 8 papers around it. For PE and Windows 10, place 9 papers filling all of the boxes. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a map.

Crafting recipe for map

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the map will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move the Map to Inventory
