I peter 2 esv DEFAULT

v1: Peter addresses his words especially to young Christians. He refers not so much to sins of commission, but of sinful attitudes, as in "evil desires," Eph "former way of life." Our whole way of life must be different, actions and attitudes, thoughts and words, desires and ambitions. We must deliberately put off sinful attitudes.

v2: The pure milk of the word, likened to a mother's milk; providing a perfect balance of nutrients for the child, and also forging a link between mother and child. This is an essential desire of the new Christian.

v3: Since you have tasted; those people had started off aright, now they must continue in holy living. The real Christian has some experience of God; Ps ; ; 2 Cor We do taste, and we know that He is good. This is also something first hand, as in John

v Peter directly addresses the "strangers" (), or pilgrims. He uses numerous O.T. references and allusions, reflecting his own background and his calling to minister to the Jewish people. He uses the language of the temple, for God's people are worshippers. We are holy people, for Christianity does not have to do with holy buildings.

v We are living stones, coming to the Living Stone; we are not dead; 2 Cor refers to the "ministry of death," the O.T. law which brings condemnation. The new 'temple of God' is built with living stones, Eph In the temple the foundations were precious stones (1 Kings ).

Peter is also full of the Lord Jesus; his whole letter makes constant reference; His resurrection (), His return (), His blood (), His example (v21); He is to be placed at the centre of our lives and experience. He is the "living stone," and we too are "living stones" in Him.

v6: Jesus Christ is chosen by God and precious, although rejected by the world. Our eternal destiny is based on whether we put our trust in Him.

v We who have believed on Jesus Christ find Him to be precious. God has exalted Him, made Him the "capstone" (or cornerstone), the one indispensable stone. Note too that we cannot claim to know God but reject Jesus Christ; we believe in both, John ;

Those who reject the message and person of Jesus Christ are those who fall at the rock of offence. Their disobedience causes them to fall; this is inevitable.

v We too are chosen, and chosen in Him (Eph ), and chosen by God (v4). We are chosen for a purpose, to declare His praises, being grateful that He has called us and made us His own, Is ; 2 Tim Contrast Rom , where the Name of God was blasphemed because of His people's sins. This was according to His own purpose and grace, His decision and initiative; here is the basis for our life of fulfilment and purpose. No longer are we without a community and without hope (Eph ); we are the people of God, finding mercy in Him. For Jewish readers, who perhaps felt rejection, it was important that they could be accepted in Christ. This is the language of a nation, set apart for God, and identified with Him.

v Referring to present temptations, rather than past sins. Fleshly lusts used to be a part of our lives, as in , but now we steer clear of them. Fleshly lusts are the desire for the physical rather than the spiritual, they are ordinary human desires. By tolerating such things we war against the soul, we damage ourselves spiritually. Matt ; James indicate that such desires come from within.

v The necessity of a blameless life, characterised by good works; this is also the answer to those who would persecute us ().

v Proper respect for authority; we are not to despise others, (Phil ) even though we may see their faults. People in authority are often 'public figures' whose faults are on view. As far as possible we must obey them and respect them. The servant of God will not strive against or resist authority.

It is possible that Peter's letters coincided with the persecution under the Emperor Nero, which led to many Christians being brutally put to death. The principles that Peter establishes are important, even in such difficult circumstances.

v The emphasis on doing good in all situations. A servant in the first century may have had to endure poor treatment, but the command here is to show respect, even to the harsh master.

v Peter makes a distinction between suffering punishment for wrong doing, and persecution for the sake of Christ. If we do wrong, and suffer punishment, that is not persecution.

v Suffering is part of our calling; Christ, our Master, suffered, and we must expect the same treatment at the hands of man. We are not to think it strange that we suffer unjustly, or endure cruelty.

But Christ is also our example in His suffering, and we must learn to respond as He did. Christ did not threaten or revile in return, which is the natural reaction.

v Ultimately, it was through His suffering that our sins were dealt with. He suffered that we might live, Col , and He calls us to suffer with Him. Servants and masters have equal status in Christ; He died for all of us.

We are called to live for righteousness, and that is often the route to suffering. Again, our example is Christ who went about doing good.

v Many Jewish people had turned their backs on Christ, rejecting His claim to be Messiah. But now some were returning to their Shepherd and Overseer. The link with Is is clear, that we can return because God laid our iniquity upon the Lord Jesus.

1 Peter 2

A Living Stone and a Holy People

1j So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.2k Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual l milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation -3if indeed you have m tasted that the Lord is good.

4As you come to him, a living stone n rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,5o you yourselves like living stones are being built up as p a spiritual house, to be q a holy priesthood, r to offer spiritual sacrifices s acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

6For it stands in Scripture:
t "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
u and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."

7So the honor is for you who v believe, but for those who v do not believe,
w "The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,"

8and
x "A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense."
They stumble because they disobey the word, y as they were destined to do.

9But you are z a chosen race, a a royal b priesthood, c a holy nation, d a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you e out of darkness into f his marvelous light.10g Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11Beloved, I urge you h as sojourners and exiles i to abstain from the passions of the flesh, j which wage war against your soul.12k Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, l they may see your good deeds and glorify God on m the day of visitation.

Submission to Authority

13n Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,14or to governors as sent by him o to punish those who do evil and p to praise those who do good.15For this is the will of God, q that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.16r Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but s living as servants of God.17t Honor everyone. u Love the brotherhood. v Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18w Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.19For this is a gracious thing, when, x mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But y if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.21For z to this you have been called, y because Christ also suffered for you, a leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.22b He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.23c When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, d but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.24e He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we f might die to sin and g live to righteousness. h By his wounds you have been healed.25For i you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to j the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

1 Peter 2 (ESV)

1 Peter 2 English Standard Version

21 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Christ the Living Stone

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." 7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone," 8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

God's Own People

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Live as Servants of God

11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord&#;s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-- 16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

The Example of Christ's Suffering

18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. 19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Bible Book 61. 2 Peter Complete 1-3, English Standard Version (ESV) Read Along Bible

English Standard Version (ESV), 2 Peter 2

1    But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

2    And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.

3    And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

4    For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

5    if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

6    if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

7    and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked

8    (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard);

9    then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

10   and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones,

11   whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.

12   But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction,

13   suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you.

14   They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!

15   Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,

16   but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

17   These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.

18   For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.

19   They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.

20   For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

21   For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

22   What the true proverb says has happened to them: The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.

Now discussing:

1 Peter 2

English Standard Version

A Living Stone and a Holy People

(A)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.(B)Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual (C)milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have (D)tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone (E)rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,(F)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as (G)a spiritual house, to be (H)a holy priesthood, (I)to offer spiritual sacrifices (J)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.For it stands in Scripture:

(K)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(L)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (M)believe, but for those who (N)do not believe,

(O)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”

and

(P)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (Q)as they were destined to do.

But you are (R)a chosen race, (S)a royal (T)priesthood, (U)a holy nation, (V)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you (W)out of darkness into (X)his marvelous light.10 (Y)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you (Z)as sojourners and exiles (AA)to abstain from the passions of the flesh, (AB)which wage war against your soul.12 (AC)Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, (AD)they may see your good deeds and glorify God on (AE)the day of visitation.

Submission to Authority

13 (AF)Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,14 or to governors as sent by him (AG)to punish those who do evil and (AH)to praise those who do good.15 For this is the will of God, (AI)that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.16 (AJ)Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but (AK)living as servants of God.17 (AL)Honor everyone. (AM)Love the brotherhood. (AN)Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18 (AO)Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.19 For this is a gracious thing, when, (AP)mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But (AQ)if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.21 For (AR)to this you have been called, (AS)because Christ also suffered for you, (AT)leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.22 (AU)He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.23 (AV)When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, (AW)but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.24 (AX)He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we (AY)might die to sin and (AZ)live to righteousness. (BA)By his wounds you have been healed.25 For (BB)you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to (BC)the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
