  • Very soft, cute, easy assembly!

    By kittymama on Oct 9,

This was literally the easiest assembly you could imagine! Screws already in posts, just unwrap and screw three pieces together! It took less than 1 minute!!! No tools or instructions needed! I bought 4 new scratchers (3 different), all pictured in my review, and so far my cats haven't touched this one; could be that we already have a similar looking one in a spare room, idk. It's my 2nd favorite out of the 3 styles I bought & so far their least favorite though. I would still definitely recommend especially if your not one who likes assembly. • Quality is meh

    By greengoddessyum on Sep 21,

I am fairly new to having cats. I got one in Sept , and another in July The top part of this cactus starting coming apart before we got our second cat and then came off completely a bit after he came along. He does have his own smaller scratching post that he uses most of the time. Like others have stated, the sisal is still in good shape but the top part is just sitting on top of this thing like a hat now. I think the best solution would be to use a little more fabric instead of stretching it so taut so that they can get away with using less. Not sure I would repurchase this, I did like the look when it was new and together.

  • Cats love it

    By PartialMarshall on Sep 28,

I acquired this for my two kittens, now five months old, several weeks ago. They're obsessed with it. I keep them in another part of the house during the day while I'm at work and as soon as I get home and let them out they stampede through the house and race one another to the top of the cactus. It's taken quite a bit of rough play from them and so far has held up well. Not to mention that it's really cute.

  • My cat is extremely uninterested

    By Maddie on Oct 8,

My cat has never once scratched it. I put it in front of my couch to minimize scratching damage, and it has made zero difference, besides working as a bit of a barrier. That doesn’t really do much though. He jumps over it and scratches the arms of my couch. The cactus (which I’ve had for four months) still looks brand new. Such a bummer.

  • Decent scratching post

    By Emily on Sep 21,

My cats have loved this scratching post from the moment I set it up. I have the same complaints others have had. The top should be made of sturdier material. It is too soft and cat claws get stuck in it and the attached ball. If the top had better material, it could’ve provided a nice perch. Despite the material flaw, the cats scratch, hug, and hang out around this post often. The base is a nice size and cat approved. Overall, this is a worthy purchase.

  • Sorry, but boring

    By Bunny on Sep 28,

All of my cats were curious, at first, with the cactus scratcher. However, after giving it a good, long sniff, all my critters walked away. One of my cats gave it a momentary swat, turned, and walked off. Maybe a young kitten would enjoy this more. It’s been by my front door now, and I will take it to Goodwill, next time I go. Sorry, but it needs to be taller.

  • not good quality

    By Michelle on Oct 5,

I was so happy when we first got this, it’s super cute! Anyone who came over complimented the scratching post. Unfortunately, after about 3 months the top has come unstapled from the post and it’s unusable now. I would get yourself a better quality scratching post and pay a little more for it.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!

    By Kelly on Oct 6,

my kitties had a bad habit of scratching my furniture. I tried the little rubber nail tips but they chewed them off in no time. Once I got this scratcher, they stopped scratching anything else!! they love it!! The first one held up really well and lasted about a year, so when they wore it out, I ordered a second one.

  • Great! But need replacement.

    By Post on Oct 3,

My cat loves her cacti post! I was able to coerce her to use with cat nip and it’s a hit. I bought it about months ago and with all the love she’s given it in that time, the post is very warn. I’d love the option of swapping out the post that she scratches for a fresh one. Is that available?

  • Excellent Scratch Post for the More Voluptuous Cat

    By Mazzy on Oct 2,

I was very excited when the box to my brand new cool Cactus Scratch Post came in and I could hardly wait till mom finally got out of the meowing way to let me at it! It didn’t take mom very long to assemble it even while I was constantly getting in the way to try it out already and it seemed easy to put together. I’d give this Cactus a 10 out of 10 paws because it’s very durable with a nice sturdy bottom so even a chunky cat like myself can go nuts on this thing! I definitely recommend the larger size because that way you can stretch out and dangle from it while you’re attacking it. Excellent purchase mom! I give this two paws up!

Cactus DIY Cat Scratching Post Your Cat Will LOVE

There are so many cat toys, climbing frames, scratching posts and more out there to keep your feline friend happy these days &#; but at Create and Craft we believe the very best of them are, of course, the ones you make yourself! So with that in mind, we&#;ve asked the fabulous Penelope Quinn (and her four-legged quality control assistant, Maui) to put together a DIY cat scratching post project to impress&#; and we think you&#;re going to love it!

Check out Penelope&#;s step-by-step tutorial below, and create something both you and your cat will adore, in equal measure.

DIY Cat Scratching Post Title

Do you take pet parenting as seriously as we do? Your furry friends will love this cactus cat scratcher made out of sisal rope; douse the felt flowers in kitty nip and they&#;ll find it irresistible!

You Will Need:

  • 50cm x 50cm plywood, approx cm deep
  • 50cm x 50cm fake grass
  • 2 part plastic Christmas baubles (big enough to fit over the end of the pipe)
  • Green spray paint
  • 54 metres of natural sisal rope
  • 2 packets of green dye
  • Glue sticks
  • Glue gun
  • Hammer
  • Electric Drill
  • Strong glue such as Gorilla Grip
  • Sand or concrete
  • Felt to make flowers

PIPE&#;

  • 60cm of 80mm pipe, cut into 8cm pieces
  • 6 x 80mm connectors
  • Toilet flange to fit 80mm
  • 80 mm 43 degree bend
  • 80 mm 95 degree bend
  • 2 x 95 degree junction

How to Make an Awesome DIY Cat Scratching Post:

Step 1:

Before you begin, dye your sisal rope. I used 2 packets, but you may need more. Soak overnight so the dye soaks through the entire rope.

Step 2:

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Centre the flange onto your board, and mark with a pencil where the screws will go. Use your electric drill to pre-drill the holes, and then secure your flange with screws.

Step 3:

Cut a hole in your fake grass so it fits snugly over the flange. Glue it onto the board. Put your first connector onto the flange; if it doesn’t fit % snug, apply plenty of glue.

Step 4:

Take one of your 8cm pipe bits you have cut, and hammer this gently into the connector.

Step 5:

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Keep going, using a pipe in between each connector until you have 4 connectors stacked on top of each other, held together with 5 pieces of 8cm pipe.

Step 6:

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Fill with sand or concrete to help keep it steady.

Step 7:

Attach a 95 degree junction, followed by an 8cm pipe, and a 45 degree bend.

Step 8:

Connect your second 95 degree junction. For the second arm of the cactus, use a connector, and the 95 degree bend.

Step 9:

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Break your plastic baubles in half, and use a glue gun to secure to each of the arms, and one on top.

Step

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Spray paint your cactus green. It doesn’t need to be a perfect finish.

Step

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Take your dyed sisal rope, and begin to glue gun it around the base of your cactus, continuing up.

Step

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

When you reach a junction, criss-cross over a couple of times, then keep working your way up until you’ve covered the entire cactus in rope.

Step

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Cover the spaces by measuring up smaller pieces of rope, and gluing them in.

Step

DIY Cat Scratching Post Tutorial Image

Add a couple of flowers and pom poms, and it&#;s ready &#; there&#;s nothing left to do, but leave it out for your fur baby to enjoy!

Penelope&#;s Top Tips:

  • You can use what ever type of connectors and bends you can find, depending on what shaped cactus you’d like!
  • Big hardware stores and plumbing shops are the place to find all your plumbing bits.
  • If you don’t have 2-piece baubles, you can also use Styrofoam balls.
  • Spray painting your cactus first will hide a multitude of sins.
  • You will use A LOT of glue sticks&#; so I recommend investing in plenty, to avoid disappointment halfway through your project!
  • While it’s tempting to get nylon or synthetic rope as it’s cheaper (and it also comes in green!) I recommend always using sisal rope and dying with fabric dye. Cats like to sharpen their claws on things they can shred, and they risk getting their claws caught on the synthetic stuff. Sisal rope is irresistible to cats!
  • I found that the dye hadn’t soaked through the entire rope in places – which was especially noticeable when I started cutting smaller bits of rope. I painted on extra dye to colour the ends of this rope to help disguise it.

A cactus cat scratcher or cactus cat tree is a fun way of providing your cat with somewhere to scratch and stretch. It will provide a talking point in your home, and there are some fantastic cactus cat scratchers available!

We have identified our favourite cactus cat scratchers with some detailed reviews below, but if you are in a hurry then you can consult our easy to read table.

Prices pulled from the Amazon Product Advertising API on:

Why Do You Need a Cactus Cat Scratcher?

Although you love your cat deeply, having your furniture and carpets scratched by the cat can be a real problem. Cats have a natural instinct to scratch, and we discussed the reasons for this in our article on the best cat scratching posts.

Cats scratch to remove the old layer on top of their claws and reveal a new and sharp layer. They also do it to stretch their bodies and to stay healthy.

It is therefore important to have somewhere for your cats to scratch in your home, so just like a flower cat tree, a cactus cat scratcher is a lot more fun than a boring old scratching post!

Features of a Good Cactus Cat Scratcher

Finding the best cactus cat scratcher or cactus cat tree provides your kitty with a chance to keep its claws healthy. Here are some features that you should consider before buying the best cactus cat tree or scratcher.

Adequate Size

Make sure that your cactus cat scratcher is suitable for the size of the cat. Kittens and medium-sized cats need a shorter cactus tree that they can play with. If you have a bigger cat, you need to buy a larger and sturdier post. This should also be considered when you have multiple cats in the house.

A bigger base guarantees that the post will be more stable. You should make sure that you have enough space to set up the cactus tree, so your feline doesn’t accidentally knock down any furniture or accessories while playing.

Some cactus cat scratchers come in the form of a cactus flower plant rather than a cactus cat tree. These can provide a nice place for your cat to sharpen their claws, but we would probably recommend using these in conjunction with another, larger cactus cat tree or scratching post. A cat scratching barrel is another option.

Durable Material

Natural fibres are preferred because they don’t cause an allergic reaction even when your cat plays with the cactus tree for a long time. Sisal ropes and jute fabric work because they are durable enough to withstand regular scratching.

Fast Assembly

You should choose a cactus tree that is easy to put together. Following the instructions shouldn’t take much time, so your kitty can start playing with the tree. If you feel that the base is still flimsy, you might need to add more screws, especially if you have an active feline in the house.

Play Features

Although they may not have as many features as a large cat tree, a wooden cat tree or a floor to ceiling cat tree, some cactus cat scratchers have dangling toys that can keep your cats occupied. This can be especially useful if they are indoor cats and don’t get to play outside.

Cactus Cat Scratcher Reviews

Regular scratching is vital for the cat’s mental and physical well-being. Check out our top picks.

Knowooh Cactus Cat Scratching Flower

  • Unique cactus flower design

This cactus cat scratcher provides something different as it is in the shape of a pretty cactus flower rather than the spiky cactus plants of the other designs.

This cactus flower scratcher provides an excellent place for your cat to sharpen her claws, although you may want to use it in conjunction with a larger scratching post or cat scratching barrel so that she can stretch out her body properly.

  • Imported from USA but still good value

Our final choice for the best cactus cat scratching post is this post from the team at PetNPurr.

The post has a realistic cactus tree design, so will bring a taste of the desert to your living room. The post is covered in strong and durable sisal rope, and includes a stable platform allowing your cat to stretch, scratch and rub to their heart's content.

This post is imported from the USA, but even with the longer delivery times it makes a great choice for a good cactus cat scratching post.

Summary

Buying a cactus cat scratcher for your cat protects your furniture from excessive scratching that can damage your sofas and chairs. At the same time, it will look great in your home and your cat will be able to enjoy its time and file its claws easily.

There are some great scratchers available, and we think that the best cactus cat scratchers are the Karlie Designed by Lotte scratching post and the PAWZ Road Cactus Scratching Post. They each have different designs and features, so your final choice will be up to you!
