Regular Price is $69.99 - On Sale for $49.99!

The longboat kit offered here at less than wholesale is our way of asking you to join us and get a taste of serious wood model building.
The longboat is not an overnight build. In fact, expect to invest at least 30 hours to do it right. We have replicated every plank and beam as well as the metal parts and the rig. There is nothing amateurish or "beginner" about this kit. We leave nothing to be figured out but take you step by step through the building process.

18th CENTURY 26 FT. LONGBOAT
The longboat was the largest boat aboard an 18th century ship.
Longboats were kept fully provisioned at all times in case of an emergency. Longboats were carvel built with the planks meeting flush at the seams rather than overlapping. A full bow, high sides and fine aft lines made it fairly seaworthy in heavy winds and steep waves. The interior was fitted with thwarts to accommodate eight to ten oarsmen. A ships gun could also be mounted in the bow.
Our longboat is a true plank-on-frame model, built much like the real longboats of the 18th century. The kit uses the finest laser cut basswood for false keel, ribs, locker, floorboards and thwarts. Other materials include brass strips, belaying pins, eyebolts & nails, wooden blocks & deadeyes, black & tan rigging line and cast metal anchor. Pre-printed side friezes and stern decorations are also included.

included are 2 sheets of plans & a 20-page illustrated instruction manual address every detail.

Length 11-3/4" Height 10" - Scale 1/4 = 1 ft.

PDF Link to instructions - http://goo.gl/lcW5nj
PDF Link to Parts List-http://goo.gl/5McgtK

Model Expo has been serving hobby enthusiasts with precision hobby kits and tools since 1976, and is a hobby kit manufacturer, distributor, and reseller.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: How suitable is this kit for a rank beginner?

Answer: While it is billed as a beginner's kit it is no such thing. Yes the instruction book is good but the extremely small size means you'll be trying to drill holes in brass stock that is 1/32 wide. I've build a number of model airplanes with balsa and tissue but nothing as frustrating as this. Calling it an intro to ship modelling is going to leave a number of people never wanting to see a model ship again. I've built full sized sailing dingys faster.
  • Question: Why the two sets of false keel?

Answer: We erred in excess. You only need one. Keep it just in case.
  • Question: Why the link to detail instructions don't go to any place?

Answer: I will never again buy a Chinese knock-off. The quality is really bad and you never get any support. I will buy European kits. You pay more but you get so much more. If you have no experience in building model ships Chinese kits will turn you off. There is no any kind of support from them.
  • Question: do rigging deadeyes, single blocks and double blocks come with the kit? Premade or expected to fashion them out of some kind of stock?

Answer: All wooden (walnut) deadeyes, blocks and multiple diameters of rigging line are in included in the kit. Plans and instructions are extensive and detailed. Bulkheads are laser cut, stripwood is made of basswood (not balsa), metal fittings are made of cast Brittania (white metal) and brass. Decorations are photo-etched brass.
  • Question: What are the rigging's made of?

Answer: I used two sizes of black cotton thread for lines and cut down dowels for pullies.
  • Question: are the parts die cut?

Answer: Laser cut. The net effect is the same but you don't run into sheets cut with dies that wore out a long time ago.
  • Question: Any planking tips.. toward the bow? if i divide the first bulkhead by number of planks it’s like 1/16.. normal planking tips seam odd.?. small boat...

Answer: We can best answer your question by having you take a look at the instructions. Copy and paste this URL into your browser ...http://modelexpo-online.com/assets/images/documents/MS1457-Longboat-Instructions-WEB.pdf

Not for absolute beginners.

Not really for beginners as planking takes some practice although the kit contains plenty of extra pieces. Really fun and satisfying. Great price.

This is an Excellent beginners wooden ship model

As this was my first wooden ship model, and I purchased it specifically due to its size, price and difficulty level, I'd like to add my comments to the list. Yes, This model is challenging, it is NOT simple. I've made more then one mistake in the build process. Thats exactly what a beginners model is supposed to be. If it was dead simple you wouldnt learn anything from building it. The planking was difficult... next ship will be better. Building the Mast and spars was also challenging... but I learned a lot from the mistakes I made. I'm in the process of finishing the painting, and figuring out the rigging.. I'll certainly make a couple mistakes there also. But the model is looking pretty good, even if I had totally screwed it up, I'd still only be out $60.00 and still gained experience. THAT's what makes this a great beginners model. Don't let the whiners talk you out of it. Give it a try. Next is the Rattlesnake.

Fun kit to build

Really enjoyed constructing this model. Plans are easy to follow but the drawings are not to exact dimensions. The rigging rope that comes with the kit seems to be too big for use with the deadeyes and there isn't enough basswood strips included in the kit to finish the hull and other parts of the model. Small details to remember but worth the build.

Quality

It’s very poor quality almost no instructions. Not worth the money. If you are new in building model ships, it is NOT for you.

Dissapointment

The kit came without the mounting stand which is clearly shown in all pictures and documation. Really dissappointed with what I thought was going to be a cool project

Looks like a great kit!

Having so far just looked through the contents and instructions, it looks like quite a challenge for me as a beginner. First attept at a plank on frame model, but I look forward to giving it a try.

Product Details

  • Model Shipways’ kit is relatively easy to build, thanks to CAD-assisted laser-cut basswood parts, which come in a variety of thicknesses from 3/32” to 1/8”.
  • Fine basswood is also used for hull and deck planking. A host of fittings ensures that the model you’ll build is authentic to the last detail.
  • An unusual feature of this model is that the hull is planked inside and out!
  • cast Britannia metal guns are miniature versions of the original armament. Brass nails, eyebolts, belaying pins and split rings are correctly scaled, and a photo-etched sheet of detail parts adds the finishing touches.
  • Deadeyes, blocks and bullseyes are ready-to-use hardwood. Six diameters of rigging line and ample sail material are also included. Six sheets of plans, parts list with parts identifier and clearly written instruction manual guarantee a great modeling experience.

Building the MA1050 Model Airways Fokker Eindecker E-IV 1:16 Scale kit

I spent a few enjoyable months building the Eindecker model and should you decide to tackle the kit, here are some observations you may find interesting. The first thing you notice about this excellent kit is the exceptional number of metal parts – a total of 111 different Britannia cast metal parts, plus other brass bolts, nuts, and tubing, in addition to the laser-cut wood and other materials. The builder needs to identify all the Britannia metal parts to know where they go, and this is not always straightforward using only the relatively small photos in the instruction manual and the “Assembled Views” plan sheets. This is where the Parts List comes in – be sure to keep it handy because it’s the one reference that provides the name and associated part number for each part. Using the Parts List, you can find the part number for each part named in the instruction manual, and then find that part number on the “Parts Layout & Color Guide” plan sheet to see exactly what it looks like.
