The purpose of this website is to provide general information to the public about conditions on selected state routes. Because incidents and road conditions, whether attributable to traffic crashes or are weather-related, can rapidly change, this website may not reflect all incidents or road conditions for every route and should not be your only source for information. It should also be noted that reported road conditions are limited to those routes maintained by the NMDOT.
In some instances the information being provided is through a third party (i.e., weather conditions through the National Weather Service). The NMDOT is presenting this information as a service to its users and is not responsible for the accuracy or precision of the information they provide.
The website is intended to serve as a tool for planning your travel route and is not a guaranteed assessment of road conditions or incidents for any given time or location.
Welcome to the New York State Winter Travel Advisory System. . The system has activated for the 2019 - 2020 winter season.
The purpose of the system is to provide information about many of New York State's most traveled roads directly from the operators that are performing the snow and ice operations. Our operators will provide reports to this system in areas where they are plowing or treating a highway due to winter weather. This advisory system provides a color coded map of major NYS highways indicating where many of these operations are occurring and the conditions that our operators are observing. The information displays as winter road conditions on the 511NY map.
The New York State Department of Transportation cautions travelers to avoid travel whenever possible when winter weather makes driving difficult -- but in cases where travel is necessary this system can provide you information about potential conditions during your trip.
Please visit the new and improved Winter Road Conditions that are offered through the 511NY service. Use the standard Google Maps controls shown to navigate around the site. The "Select a Region" dropdown box allows the user to choose a New York statewide view or to zoom to any one of the nine 511NY reporting regions for winter travel information. Placing the cursor over a shaded highway segment will cause a popup box to appear showing additional information about that WTA Road Segment.
A gray segment indicates that there is no current weather that would require active reporting on pavement conditions.
If you have any questions about the Winter Travel Advisory or would like to leave a comment about our new look, please contact us.

DOT's Traffic Management Center (TMC), located in Long Island City, Queens, receives feeds from closed circuit television cameras trained on major arteries. The TMC receives data from a coalition of transportation and public safety agencies in New York managed by Transcom - allowing operations staff to track live traffic conditions at key locations in the City.
Traffic & Transit Cameras
View real-time traffic and transit events, as well as cameras in the New York City area, via 511NY, New York State's official traffic and travel information source. 511NY's Real-Time Traffic map contains data provided by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the New York City Department of Transportation, and the New York State Thruway Authority. In addition, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates many NYC bridges and tunnels and has several camera feeds.
This map provides information including current construction projects, special events, collisions/incidents, and camera feeds in New York.
How to Use the 511NY Traffic/Transit Map
Select "Map Legend" on the upper right of the map to select which traffic conditions to view. Zoom in on roadways and click on the map's icons for information at a specific location. For example, check "Cameras" to view real-time camera feeds. Click on the camera icon on the map to view the image. The map may also be zoomed out to conditions in the areas surrounding NYC. From time to time, cameras may be out of service because of construction, weather conditions, or mechanical or electrical failure. These cameras will be restored to service as soon as possible.
Info about NYC Traffic Cameras
To view only NYC DOT cameras online, visit nyctmc.org or view a list of NYC DOT traffic cameras. Cameras provide frequently updated still images from locations in the five boroughs. The cameras are being used by DOT staff to monitor traffic conditions, and may be repositioned to view traffic from varying directions. You may see different views if you visit a camera location at different times.
NYC DOT traffic cameras only provide live feeds and do not record any footage.
