What oil is in my transmission?
Models 5 through 85 will primarily use automatic transmission fluid. Models 220 through 60000 will use 30W. Refer to ZF oil list for specific instructions or contact ZF.
What filter is used on it?

Can I use a non-ZF filter?
This is not recommended. Only Genuine ZF parts should be used in order to ensure proper service life of your ZF equipment.
What is my oil capacity?
Look under the dimensions table of your model. Many models have the capacity right on the ZF data tag.
What are the service intervals?
This is listed in the owner’s manual for your specific model and it depends on your particular application and duty rating.
A reader asks: We have two ZF 301 marine transmissions and the current transmission oil is getting very hot. We would like to try an AMSOIL synthetic oil for this application. What have you got there?
Our answer:According to our research, your transmissions call for a straight-grade SAE 30 engine oil meeting any of these common motor oil specifications.
- API CD/CE/CF-4/CF/CG-4/CH-4/CI-4
- API SF/SG/SH/SJ/SL
- ACEA A/B/E
Update- August, 2020: The product recommended below (AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30/SAE 30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil) has been discontinued. The good news is that we have a substitute that is an even better option. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Small Engine Oil is designed for SAE 30 applications. It easily covers the industry specs listed above. Small Engine 10W-30 contains a very powerful anti-rust/corrosion package. This is obviously a welcome feature for marine applications. To sum up, this product is very robust and perfect for any ZF marine transmission requiring an SAE 30 oil.
We do offer one particular product that covers these specifications and qualifies as a “straight grade” SAE 30 motor oil. AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30/SAE 30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is considered to be a straight-grade SAE 30. Here’s why this full synthetic SAE30 engine oil would be a great candidate for your ZF marine transmission.
- Shear stable, maintains viscosity
- Full synthetic formula reduces friction for cooler operation
- Low volatility, will not boil-off when exposed to extreme heat
- Resists deposit formation
- Provides powerful wear control
- Optimizes power transfer and efficiency
- Designed for long service life
- A true all-climate straight SAE 30 oil
