Lynchburg Humane Society currently caring for 445 cats and kittens, ‘in dire need’ of fosters and adopters
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Kitten season has hit the Lynchburg Humane Society extra hard this year, leaving the center filled with more than 400 felines and in desperate need of fosters and adopters.
As of Thursday, July 8, the Lynchburg Humane Society says there are 445 cats and kittens in the center. With so many felines coming through the animal shelter’s doors, illness is never far behind.
The humane society says the current illness of concern is Coccidiosis, which comes from a parasite that affects the intestines and usually causes diarrhea.
“In a shelter, no matter how hard we try to keep pets comfortable, it is stressful which make them more susceptible to illness,” the Lynchburg Humane Society said. “These kittens need to be in homes. They will improve faster and be less stressed.”
Fostering kittens is usually a two week commitment. All they need is a space that can be easily cleaned, such as a bathroom; a litter box that is cleaned daily; possibly a bath to clean their tail area; good food; and plenty of love. The humane society will even provide you with the medications, food, litter, and litter box.
According to the humane society, Coccidia does not typically transfer to other species, which means it is highly unlikely that you or your dog would contract Coccidia if you bring home one of these cats. If you have other cats, though, you would need to keep them separate.
If you fall in love with any of these feline friends, keep in mind that you can adopt them, too. In fact, on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11, the Lynchburg Humane Society is offering a $10 adoption fee for cats and kittens, who will receive medication if they are adopted after being diagnosed with Coccidia or if they display symptoms once they arrive in their new home.
Even if you can’t adopt or foster, you can still help out the humane society by donating wire crates or donating money for staff members to buy crates, making it easier to house kittens and clean up after them.
“Not only will you be helping the kittens, you will be helping our staff. They are working so hard and of course this work is stressful and we are short staffed like many other businesses and ……well….our staff is tired,” the Lynchburg Humane Society wrote on Facebook. “These kittens need you now more than ever. Please help save these precious lives.”
If you want to ask about fostering, you can either email [email protected] or stop by the humane society at 1211 Old Graves Mill Road. If you want to adopt, just visit the humane society between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, or 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

*Adoption fees vary
The process is simple; come in and visit with the pet you are interested in, and we will talk with you to see if it is a good match. Please bring with you a photo ID, and you are welcome to bring in your dog to do an introduction with your new pet. If the pet is not spayed or neutered, we will schedule their appointment for our next available transport day to the spay/neuter clinic.
We have dedicated volunteers and staff who can help you choose the right match for your family. Just ask for assistance, let us know what your needs are and we can help you find your next friend.
Placing an animal on ‘hold’: we want your adoption experience to be as pleasant and stress-free as possible. We allow potential adopters to place holds on pets so that they can take their time making adoption decisions, introduce family members and other pets. Holds may be placed over the phone, email or in person, and in the case of a “tie”, the individual physically visiting the shelter and the animal will be awarded the first hold on the pet.
1st hold: $30 per 24 hours
2nd hold and beyond: $15
Hold fees are non-refundable and are not applied towards the adoption fee.
About Lynchburg Humane Society - Rehome
For over fifty years, the LHS has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, we cared for 3,981 pets and 96% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a No Kill Humane Society and a 501c3. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg and Appomattox County, we accept the stray or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We also have developed a more regional/state level focus. In 2016 we helped 602 pets from other public shelters that otherwise may have had a negative outcome. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. We firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. Along with our Center for Pets we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic located in Evington, VA. The spay/neuter clinic serves Lynchburg, Campbell, Nelson, Rockbridge, Appomattox, Bedford and Amherst Counties. It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible.
Mission: Help pets in need thru sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter and community outreach.
Vision: A community free of homeless and neglected pets.

Support Adoption and Rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?
Why Should You Adopt?
Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.
What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?
When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.
So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
