ENDURANCE

In the race to conquer the South Pole, three names loomed large: Ernest Shackleton, Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen.

The Endurance was launched on 17 December under the name &#;Polaris. Originally rigged as a frigate, she was converted into a three-masted barquentine and in joined the famous Trans-Antarctic Imperial Expedition to cross Antarctica under Sir Ernest Shackleton&#;s command.

After the Expedition was shipwrecked on 19 August , the Endurance was trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea. For days the explorers braved winds up to km/h and temperatures of 40 degrees below zero.

Shackleton and a few hand-picked men took a small boat, the James Caird, and made one of the most memorable and heroic journeys in sailing history. Together with all their crew, they accomplished the most important feat of all&#;surviving.

The expedition is remembered as an epic story of endurance, heroism and survival.

The kit features laser-cut parts for the framework, and double plank-on-bulkhead hull construction for ease of build. High quality wood strips are provided for hull and deck planking, wooden dowels for masts and yards, and a full set of fittings in wood, brass, and cast metal. The kit also includes colorful flag, rigging cord, display cradle, and a full set of pre-sewn sails. A pictorial instruction book and plans sheets make for an easy to understand build.

History of the Endurance

The Endurance was a three-masted barquentine built by Framnaes Shipyard, Sandefjord in Norway and was launched in She had a complement of 28 and was built for Antarctica expeditions.

Every detail of the Endurance’s construction had been planned to ensure maximum durability as each joint and fitting cross-braced each other for maximum strength. The Endurance was built of planks of Oak and Norwegian fir which were strong and heavy. Special attention was given to her bow where she would meet the ice head-on. These pieces had a thickness of 4 feet and 4 inches and the Endurance was one of the strongest ships ever built. She had a coal-fired steam engine combined with sails and was capable of speeds up to knots (19km/h).

Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed on the Endurance for the Antarctic on the Imperial Trans-Atlantic Expedition. She sailed from Plymouth via Madeira to Buenos Aires under command of Captain Frank Worsley. Shackleton joined the ship later in Buenos Aires.

The Endurance entered the packed ice and got stuck within sight of the continent only sixty miles from her intended destination. The Endurance drifted for nine months and was so battered by the ice that Shackleton wrote, “she was doomed”, the crew abandoned ship and she sank in November The crew used the three boats to row and sail towards the uninhabited Elephant Island, which they reached four months later in April

Shackleton’s determination and ingenuity on the Endurance expedition earned him a place in the history of exploration.

The Endurance was the last ship of her kind.

Just found out today that OcCre has produced another new kit, which they announced on their Facebook page today. The kit is a scale model of the ship Endurance, which carried Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew on their famous Trans-Antarctic Imperial Expedition in

The Endurance was a 3-masted barquentine or barkentine that was first built in Norway as the Polaris and renamed the Endurance by Shackleton when it was purchased for the expedition. The foot long ship is described as one of the most heavily built wooden hulled ships in the world, designed to withstand the crushing pressure of operating in ice flows.

We don&#;t have a lot of details on the new kit from OcCre, except that completed model is said to measure a length of about &#; and a height of &#;, and that we should have them in stock in another week or two. So, stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are some photos of the new kit. Hopefully, this will whet your appetites until the new kits goes online.

And if all those photos aren&#;t enough for you, how about this Youtube sneak preview video?

Check back with us in the coming days for the latest word on the availability of this amazing looking new kit. Our initial stocks may be a bit limited, so check here often and be among the first to get this new kit from OcCre, here at Ages of Sail.

We just received our first shipment of the newest kit from the Spanish wooden ship model kit manufacturer, OcCre. The ship is the 1/scale model of Endurance, the Antarctic exploration ship of Sir Ernest Shackleton. A 3-masted barquentine (or barkentine) built in Sandefjord, Norway, the carried Shackleton and his crew of 27 for the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in

The Endurance was a sturdy ship, feet long, and built with a reinforced hull. The ship was equipped with a coal-fired steam engine that could propel the ship at over 10 knots. Though she was considered to be perhaps the strongest wooden ship ever built, she could not overcome the power of nature. In January of , strong winds had piled up thick packs of ice around the ship, and became locked in the Antarctic ice. Ultimately, by October, she was crushed by pressure waves in the ice around her, and her crew was forced to abandon her.

After months on the ice, Shackleton and his crew took to the lifeboats and made it to the uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and five of his men then continued to sail miles in an open boat to get help and mount a rescue expedition for the rest of his men. The crew of the Endurance survived the ordeal without a single loss of life.

OcCre&#;s kit features an MDF (medium density fiberboard) keel piece with laser-cut plywood bulkheads. Major structural parts are also laser-cut for ease of construction. A healthy supply of strip woods are provided for the planking of the hull, which is accomplished in two layers. Two sheets of photo-etched brass and a supply of wooden, cast metal, and brass fittings are provided to detail your model. To finish up the model, several spools of rigging line, pre-sewn sails, and printed flag sheet is provided.

The included instructions are in a step-by-step, pictorial format, and you can download and preview a copy of them here: Endurance Instructions

Want more help with your build? OcCre has you covered, with a part series of instructional videos on Youtube, designed to guide you through the construction of the hull. Here&#;s a link to the video series: Endurance Build Videos

Kit ship endurance model

The Endurance &#; Occre ()

Endurance:
Much like her name, the story behind the Endurance is one of bravery and perseverance.
Originally built in Norway for the purpose of tourist cruises to the Arctic, the Endurance
was the famous 3-masted barquentine which was chosen by Sir Ernest Shackleton for the
Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in Hand picked for her strength and ability to
brace the extreme polar conditions, the ship’s name was changed from The Polaris to The
Endurance to honour Shackleton’s family motto; “By Endurance we conquer”.
The Endurance was skilfully constructed from oak and Norwegian fir, and encased
in layer of greenheart for additional support. Joints and fittings were cross-braced, to
maximise durability. Also made of oak, the bow was m thick and designed to break
through the ice, rather than rise above it. Unfortunately, this strength became her downfall.
The Expedition came to an end in January of , when unprecedented temperatures
and heavy winds led to the accumulation of ice, which trapped the ship.
The Endurance continued to battle against the packed ice for several months, until
she caved in and sank below the icy waters. Facing no choice but to abandon her, the
crew departed upon a dangerous and brave journey across the Antarctic, until they were
rescued days later.

Occre’s Endurance wooden ship model kits comes equipped with high-quality laser-cut
plywood parts for the framework, sub-deck, and major structural components. It also
includes a full selection of fittings, allowing you to create a real-life replica of the
Endurance.
