Faulty wheels have been a touchy subject for Corvette owners, particularly those who own the C7 Z06 and Grand Sports as owners have complained for years about their aluminum wheels cracking under normal driving conditions. Now it appears that we have another issue with the Corvette’s wheels, but this time it’s affecting the new C8 Corvette.

General Motors has released a new Technical Service Bulletin today for the 2020-2021 Corvette regarding “Wheel Casting with Exposed Porosity” which is just a fancy way of saying that some Corvette wheels have holes in them from the casting process.

The C8 Corvette’s wheel porosity issues are covered in TSB #N202315730 and #N202315731. The cover sheet claims that the total number of U.S. vehicles involved is approximately 13,049 with only 10% of those vehicles believed to be impacted. We were able to get our hands on both PDF versions which be viewed and downloaded here and here.

Certain 2020 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles may have a condition where exposed porosity in wheel castings are larger than allowed and do not meet internal GM requirements. Vehicles in this field action are to have two sets of wheels inspected. The wheels on the vehicle are inspected under N202315730 and the extra wheels are inspected under this field action.

In the TSB, dealers are notified that affected vehicles would be marked in the GM Global Warranty Management System and when these cars come into a Chevrolet dealership for service, the technicians will need to inspect all four wheels and replace if necessary.

GM provides a list of part numbers for the wheels and it shows that both the Open Spoke and Trident Wheel designs are included in the TSB.

GM says that any wheels identified as having the porosity issue need to have a 13mm hole drilled completely through the rim barrel of the wheel so they can’t be reused, and then dispose of the faulty wheel through a reputable metal recycler.

At least GM is acknowledging the manufacturing defects and is offering to replace any affected wheels at their cost. Owners of C7s were not as lucky and many have joined several on-going class action lawsuits as GM has denied any responsibility for those wheels that have cracked or bent.

C8 Corvette Problems Range From Uneven Stitching To Leaky Transmission

Uploaded on the Corvette Forum, the first three pictures in the gallery need no explaining. A brand-spanking-new sports car shouldn’t feature wavy stitching in such an obvious part of the dashboard, let alone other problems such as the “passenger window going up and down by itself while driving.”

A different owner has spotted “small dots in the paint”after washing his car, and someone with the same issue has managed to correct the dots with a polishing compound and a microfiber cloth. The thread keeps on going, and complaints include a transmission leak as well as a “self-blowing horn.”

The worst story in the thread, however, is that of a 32-mile Corvette with a leaky transmission that’s setting a diagnostic trouble code for the limited-slip differential’s fluid pressure. What’s most curious about this particular example of the breed is that it’s been “driven conservatively,”not raced. Those are the words of the dealer technician who’s replacing the dual-clutch tranny.

To those issues, we can also highlight one of the problems that Chevy Dudehas reported with his Stingray Z51. To make a long story short, the car locks itself even with the key fob in the cabin. Because of this – let’s call it a feature – the YouTube vlogger got locked out of a pre-delivery inspection car at the Chevrolet dealership where he works as well as his own car. Oh, and let's not forget that guy who found out that a screw is gouging the door paint.

When all is said and done, it’s not exactly recommended to buy a car in the first model year of production. General Motors also has a long history of quality control issues, so yeah, it's hardly a surprise that the C8 Corvettehas its fair share of problems. Here's hope 2021 will be a better year.

Chevy rolled out their long-awaited Corvette C8, and owners are enjoying having one of them in their collection. With all the great features it comes with, there are still a few hiccups found with some of those delivered early. Some issues are small and only experienced by one or very few owners. Others are annoying, and frustrated owners express their distaste as they expected more for the money they spent.

There are many places on the Internet such as Corvette forums that show the complaints that many people have with their C8s. Here’s a list of some of them.

Flaws that might be from rushing to get to production

The Chevy C8 Corvette has a look of perfection when it comes to sports cars. However, every once in a while, some small problems come up that mar the look of an expensive vehicle. The C8 has two such issues that have many drivers wondering if they’re not the result of a hurried installation job to get a product out the door for customers.

One is a screw that holds the wheel well liner in place. The production crew might have placed the screw incorrectly, or they may have used too long of a bolt. The screw sticks out just enough to scrape the paint off the driver’s door when it’s opened up all the way. It may be one little nitpick, but still, if you spend a lot of money on a car, you expect to get perfection.

Another issue that mars the look of an expensive car has to do with the stitching found in the interior, as explained by TheDrive.com. The stitches you see on the dash and the seat covers are two popular places for the waviness owners complained about. The stitches look like installers stitched them in a hurry, which makes the interior look terrible. It’s hard to show off your prize to others when you see crumpled areas from poor stitching jobs.

When the car seems almost haunted

The C8 Corvette is full of sophisticated technology. Sometimes, things happen, and the Corvette takes on a life of its own; parts are operating without any interaction from the driver. One such case lies with the passenger power window.

Power windows have been around for a long time. They’re meant to open and close at the user’s discretion, but the Corvette C8 has power windows that take things one step further. One owner reported on the Corvette Forum that the window would go up and down on its own while they were driving down the road. The forum only has one owner reporting it, but it’s still worth noting in case you’re debating whether to buy a Corvette C8 for yourself.

Another incident reported on the same forum was with a driver that experienced their horn going off seemingly by itself. Sometimes it would operate with very light finger pressure that wasn’t actually meant for the horn. The owner that reported it took it into the shop, and the technicians figured out that the problem came from an incorrectly installed airbag in the steering wheel underneath the horn pad. Once they removed the airbag and pad and reinstalled them correctly, the issue disappeared.

Noticeable defects with the design of the Chevy Corvette C8

Two complaints that have come up are due to the design of the Chevy Corvette C8. The first one, reported by the GM Authority, became popular due to a YouTube video of one Corvette owner who merely expressed his surprise at the water pooling in the engine bay after he washed his car.

Other people trolled him in the comments section about there not being a leak like this in the C8. However, he never said that it was a leak, just that it surprised him that a fair amount of water dripped down into the engine bay right after he washed his car.

The other complaint, also reported by the GM Authority blog, was from an owner that became irritated by the color of the covering on the top of the dash. The light tan color of his C8 reflected the sunlight and cast an image onto the windshield on the driver’s side. The owner found it extremely distracting, obstructing, and just plain irritating to look at. He reported that he was looking for a way to cover that small section with a darker color, like black, that wouldn’t cast an awful reflection on the windshield.

The Corvette C8 continues to be a great sports car both in its performance and its appearance. Small issues like these will occur from time to time. Another one that has people irritated is the fact that some cars are on the resell market and are bringing in over $100,000. Paying a sum like that is questionable since the car will depreciate real fast as this Reddit thread explains. Overall, though, the price for an original is fair with all the bells and whistles Chevy offers.

Reviewers across various outlets seem to love the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette. From its value to its excellent driving experience, the new Corvette is a winner all around. However, it seems buyers will have to wait even longer to get their hands on one of these brand-new machines.

According to The Detroit News via Motor1, GM plans to shut down its Bowling Green, Kentucky plant where the Corvette is produced for a week. The issue surrounds getting transmission parts to continue producing the sportscar. Unfortunately for buyers, this is far from the first delay.

What is wrong with the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette?

In the first week of February, GM announced that it would close its Bowling Green plant for one week. While this presented a delay in producing the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, it wasn’t the end of the world. However, the following week, GM announced the plant would remain closed for yet another week.

For context, GM builds the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette in two shifts. This results in around 92 to 94 brand-new cars per day, says CarBuzz. In a five-day workweek, the plant can put out around 930 to 940 cars. CarBuzz reported that after that second shutdown, the factory was already behind on 1,860 cars.

However, this new delay reported by Motor1 reveals that the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette is struggling. The missing parts in question surround the car’s transmission. It seems the arrival of the global pandemic has made it difficult for suppliers to keep up with demand. As a result, the Corvette is suffering from issues that have nothing to do with the model itself.

Will the Corvette continue to experience delays?

Given the several delays the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette has experienced, it seems likely that they could continue. However, as Motor1 points out, GM has repeatedly stated that it is working directly with suppliers to iron out any supply issues. While the plant is scheduled to shut down on March 1st, GM announced it would reopen back up on March 8th.

As CorvetteBlogger points out, the massive winter storm rolling across the U.S. also likely contributes to this new delay. Thankfully, as the weather improves and suppliers can deliver products, there is a good chance everything will get back on schedule. For 2021, CorvetteBlogger reports that the plan has produced around 5,357 2021 Chevrolet Corvette models. However, they will quickly have to expand to build new variations.

What is next for the mid-engined sports car?

While the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette struggles with production issues, the development of the upcoming Z06 replacement continues. According to CarBuzz, this brand-new variant is set to get the flat-plane crank engine out of the C8.R race car. If the rumors are true, it will be a naturally-aspirated V8 developing around 600 hp.

According to CarBuzz, GM is expected to unveil the brand-new variant sometime in July. As a result, it won’t be long from there until we get to see it out on the road. While these production delays are unfortunate, they will likely be ironed out soon.
