The Crossword Garden, Part One: 10 Plants You Should Know

words to know

Get to know some of the “flowery language” that frequently appears in The New York Times Crossword.

Crossword puzzles expect solvers to have a good grasp of general knowledge, but sometimes certain facts just aren’t in our personal wheelhouses.

That’s O.K. We’re here to help you solve … and to help you expand those wheelhouses.

For our latest list of terms you should know to become a better solver, we’ll be visiting a “crossword garden,” taking a closer look at plants, flowers and other botanical terms that frequently show up in puzzles.

We’ll also show you ways these terms might be clued, so you’ll be able to recognize them the next time they come up. The clues that involve wordplay meant to trick you are bold, to make them easier to spot and so you can learn to think like the puzzle makers.

We’ll be back next month with another installment of the “crossword garden” that focuses more on fruits, vegetables and other edible garden products. For now, let’s stop and smell the roses, shall we?

AGAVE is a genus of various desert plants of the family Asparagaceae. Species tend to have flat, pointed green leaves and are often confused with cactuses.

“Agave” often refers to the blue agave plant, whose sap is fermented to make tequila. Many agave species produce sweeteners that are alternatives to honey and are also used in mescal liquors. Other species are sources of hemplike fiber.

Possible clues: “Tequila source,” “Tequila plant,” “Mojave plant,” “Desert bloomer,” “Mescal component,” “Yucca plant’s family,” “Source of sisal hemp”

2. ALOE

ALOE is one of the most frequently used answers in The New York Times Crossword; it has almost 1,100 total appearances!

While there are hundred of plants in the aloe family throughout Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, “aloe” in the puzzle primarily refers to aloe vera, a plant cultivated for cosmetic and medicinal benefits. It acts as a skin soother, and its extract is often used as a remedy for sunburns.

Possible clues: “___ vera,” “Skin soother,” “Medicinal plant,” “Hand lotion ingredient,” “Succulent plant,” “Natural healer,” “Anti-inflammatory agent,” “Emollient source,” “What may come as a relief?”

3. ANIL

ANIL (pronounced AN-uhl) is a dyeing compound derived from the chemical aniline, produced by the plant Indigoferaanil. As the name suggests, anil plants yield an indigo dye, which is commonly used for coloring bluejeans.

ANIL is a versatile answer for puzzle makers, and can still be clued in a variety of ways: as the plant, as the dye or — in tougher puzzles — as the color.

Possible clues: “Indigo dye source,” “Dye-yielding plant,” “Shrub that yields indigo,” “Deep blue,” “What makes bluejeans blue,” “Dye containing indigotin,” “Shade darker than azure”

4. AWN

Awns are bristly plant structures that grow on clustered protuberances known as spikelets. They are found on various grasses as well as crops such as wheat and barley, where they form a “beard” in appearance.

AWN is considered to be a classic staple of “crosswordese” — words that appear more in puzzles than real life. It does not appear as often in The New York Times Crossword today as it did many years ago, though is still worth knowing in order to become a better solver.

Possible clues: “Plant bristle,” “Barley beard,” “Botanical beard,” “Wheat or barley covering,”“Natural bristle,” “The ‘needle’ part of needle grass,” “Beard grown by a farmer?,”“Beard growing out of an ear”

ASTER is a genus of showy flowers that today includes approximately 180 species. Almost all species of this genus are found in Eurasia, with the alpine aster being the only variety native to North America.

In a broader context, ASTER can refer to flowers of the family Asteraceae, which also includes daisies. North American wildflowers such as the mountain aster and New England aster make for popular garden plants, and they can be grown in late summer and autumn.

The name “aster” derives from the Greek word for “star.” The aster is said to be a symbol of patience.

Possible clues: “Daisylike bloom,” “Fall bloomer,” “Late bloomer,” “Yellow-centered bloomer,” “Cousin of a daisy,” “China ___ (showy bloom),” “Floral symbol of patience”

6. CALLA

In the arum family of plants, CALLA has two meanings: It can refer specifically to the “arum lily” of the genus Calla, or various “calla lilies” of the related genus Zantedeschia.

Calla plants have either heart-shaped or arrow-shaped leaves. While the arum lily bears white flower petals, the eight species of calla lilies have conical petals that bear a variety of colors, some of which have spotted patterns.

Possible clues: “Kind of lily,” “Arum lily,” “Lily in a wedding bouquet,” “___ lily,” “Plant with arrow-shaped leaves,” “Showy white flower,” “Member of the arum family”

Sources: Britannica.com, XWordInfo.com

Irises are showy blooms whose name derives from the Greek word for “rainbow.” Although the flowers come in a variety of colors, the color “iris” refers to a bluish-purple shade.

In art, the iris is thought by many to be the subject of fleur-de-lis designs (despite “lis” being French for “lily”). Vincent van Gogh painted “Irises” in 1889, inspired by the flowers found in his hospital’s garden.

Note: While IRIS is often clued as the flower, it also refers to the colored part of the eye, a woman’s name or the Greek goddess of the rainbow.

Possible clues: “Showy purple bloom,” “Bearded flower,” “Tennessee’s state flower,” “Flower in a van Gogh painting,” “Pale purple shade,” “Flower girl?,” “Colored part of the eye,” “Rainbow goddess”

8. SEDGE

SEDGE refers to any grasslike plant of the family Cyperaceae. Sedge plants are found in predominantly aquatic environments, where they provide cover for marsh animals as well as play a big role in facilitating Earth’s water cycle.

Examples of familiar sedges include papyrus and the Chinese water chestnut.

Possible clues: “Marsh plant,” “Bit of swamp flora,” “Grasslike perennial,” “Aquatic ‘grass’,” “It’s a rush,” “Papyrus, e.g.,” “Swamp thing”

Sources: Britannica.com, XWordInfo.com

The SEGO lily is a bloom native to parts of the western United States. It is bulbous in appearance, and its petals have shades of white, yellow and purple.

The flower’s roots were consumed by 19th-century Mormon settlers of the Salt Lake Valley, considered lifesaving at the time. Thus, sego serves as the state flower of Utah, and is frequently clued as such.

Possible clues: “___ lily,” “Kind of lily,” “Western lily,” “Utah’s state flower,” “Utah’s ___ Canyon,” “Bell-shaped flower,” “Bulbous perennial,” “Relative of a mariposa”

Sources: Britannica.com, LDS.org, XWordInfo.com

10. SEPAL

In plant anatomy, SEPAL refers to a leaf located beneath a flower petal. The collective group of sepals circling the bloom is known as a calyx, which initially serves as an enclosure for the developing flower.

SEPAL has appeared more than 150 times in The New York Times Crossword, usually with the vague clue “Flower part.” Since both PETAL and SEPAL have a similar letter pattern, be sure to check your crossings!

Possible clues: “Flower part,” “Calyx part,” “Floral leaf,” “Leaf beneath a bloom,” “Neighbor of a petal,” “Bud protector,” “Monkshood flower’s ‘hood’”
